Latino Attitudes on Gender Issues

The role of migration can have dramatic effects on gender-role attitudes and on the political socialization of Latinas. Previous researchers found qualitative evidence on how the process of immigration can have a liberalizing effect on gender-role attitudes for Latina immigrants (Torres-Matrullo, 1976, p. 198; Ghaffarian, 1987; Hannassab, 1991; Jones-Correa, 1998b; DeBaggi, 2002), which include more progressive views on the role of women in the household (division of labor) and public sectors (employment and political opportunities).

For example, Latin American countries are still predominately thought of as patriarchal societies with very traditional gender-role attitudes. Latin American countries rank lower than the U.S. in terms of gender egalitarianism (Inglehart & Norris, 2003). This suggests Latino immigrants, especially the most recent arrivals to the US, should have markedly conservative attitudes regarding gender equality. For example, the following statements include Latinos’ explanation of the more traditional gender attitudes in Mexico (LNS, 2003):

-Woman (Los Angeles, CA; English): “I work with mostly men. . . . The real down to earth Mexican had attitude—they thought women should be in the kitchen and at home.”

-Woman (Dalton, GA; Spanish): “I grew up in Mexico until I was 9. When I go back, I see that men are machos. I do not like the atmosphere there.”
